READ: Casper Star Tribune op-ed by Jeremy Gruber

This op-ed was originally published in the Casper Star Tribune in October 2022.

In this op-ed written by Jeremy Gruber, Senior Vice President of Open Primaries, Gruber explains how an open primary system could transform Wyoming’s election system for the better. We are sharing this article because of the strong political similarities between Wyoming and South Dakota. Much of Gruber’s op-ed can be applied to South Dakota as well.

“Until recently there were two constants in American political life. First, almost every voter was a Republican or Democrat. That’s not the case anymore. Independents are now the largest and fastest-growing group of voters in the country, and they don’t want to be forced to join a private political party to vote.”
